According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a couple needs to undergo infertility counseling if, after a year of regular sexual contacts during the “fertile window” of the cycle, they have failed to achieve a pregnancy.
However, in certain cases, fertility tests and counseling must be performed early on.
Indications include:
- Advanced maternal age (over 38 years )
- Genital surgery
- Previous ectopic pregnancies
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- A very short cycle (shorter than 23-24 days)
- Dysmenorrhoea
- Dyspareunia
- Other menstrual cycle symptoms before and after menstruation (which may be related to endometriosis)
It is of paramount importance that counseling on infertility issues be performed by infertility experts.
There are several factors, which are evaluated in a different manner by these experts, since they affect infertility in different ways than they affect one’s overall health.
